Apples and Oranges in Christianity

applesoranges

Hi Everyone,

We are going to discuss about apples and oranges in Christianity.Which is to say opinions(oranges) and truths(apples).

This is a obvious problem.People who first started out as Christians have forgotten that communication with God is a complex activity.

Problem or a Complex activity is stated in the  bible:

1 Corinthians 13:9

(New Living Translation)
Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture!

Christians often forget the complexity involved in communication with God.

Some of the many problems, I could think of :

1.Accept  invalid information as  valid information

2. Reject valid information as invalid information

3. Take valid information out of context, make it valid information.

4. Argument between Christians whether something is valid or not.

5.Contradictory arguments among arguing parties, when both the arguments are wrong!

6. Two misunderstood statements that are actually in agreement or complement each other, but are argued upon!

Yes, this is nothing new. There is already a solution in place.

People like pastors, leaders are one way transmitters of information. The rest are listeners!

Like so:

This is relatively a good solution. So thumbs up. But this too has serious problems.

These problems are implications  due to  these biases:

  •  Bias towards popular leaders  (Could be a legitimate reason too)
  •  Bias towards popular opinions ( Could be right too, just saying!)

Due to these issues, 3 things could happen:

1)   Leaving the group

leave

2) Getting kicked out.

3) conflict among peers

fight

In order keep yourself safe from these biases, you can set some basic scope for usage of Opinions and Truths.

Think of opinions and Truths effectiveness as short range and long rang weapons.

You must wondering, why truth looks so much cooler and awesome.

Bible gives great importance to truth, verse. Good verse  below proves my point:

John 8:32

“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

You will also find awesome promises in Sowers parable regarding the positive outcome of receiving and acting on the truth.( sowers parable reference given further below).

In a sense opinions work well only with people who you have a close relationship. That is with the person you are in touch with.Truth works well, when you are talking with strangers.

However both has its limitations.

Interestingly enough, Parable of sower backs up my statement:

Parable of Sower (for reference)

“A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

Disadvantages:

  1. If the person does not understand the truth, it is useless.
  2. Person has allot of problems, not focused enough to process the truth.
  3. Person gives up along the way in following the truth

Thus unlike popular thinking opinion has its place. Yet again another bible verse to back it up:

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

countenance meaning: admit as acceptable or possible

Meaning if it is honest opinion based on the truth. We manage to overcome the disadvantages of Truth spoken by itself ( Of course this scenario applies to relationships).

Just like a Math solution, we have reached a solution based on the study above:

Truth must be complemented by opinion, just like a ice-cream with topping.

Like so, yummy!

opinion topping

Thanks for Reading.
